Groundbreaking for SANS Instrument at McMaster Nuclear Reactor

PI Dr. Bruce Gaulin and Director of the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research along with Vice President of Research Dr. Rob Baker and Director of Nuclear Operations and Facilities Chris Heysel held a groundbreaking ceremony for SANS on October 14, 2016.  "SANS for Nanostructured Materials" is a $9M CFI and OIT project, which will build a modern small angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument at beam port 4 of the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. The SANS state-of-the-art instrument will be the only such instrument of its kind in Canada and with construction currently underway it is targeted for completion in roughly 2 years.  The new SANS instrument will perform optimized neutron diffraction on nanoscale structure in the range from 1 to 100 nm, and will be important for understanding structure/function relationships in a host of new materials, ranging from new plastics, to superconductors and magnetic materials, to biomaterials and new steels.  It will serve a broad user base interested in optimally exploiting the properties of new materials for emerging technologies and for basic science interests.
