SPECTA collaborative effort between MNR, the McMaster Institute for Applied Radiation Sciences (McIARS), Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University resulted in the installation of two small animal radioimaging devices within the McMaster University Medical Centre. These instruments are used to visualize the biodistribution of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals in small animals with a resolution on the order of millimeters. The facility possesses a PET scanner and an integrated SPECT/CT scanner so that both positron and gamma-emitting radioisotopes can be imaged. PETThe Pre-Clinical Radioimaging Facility is staffed with experts to operate the equipment, and provides a vital link between the design and synthesis of a radiopharmaceutical in a laboratory setting, and validation of the agent as a useful clinical tool.
