Research & Education - Reactor News

In addition to the numerous faculty members and graduate students who make use of the reactor for their research, several undergraduate courses have laboratory components that involve the nuclear reactor. Dozens of students enrolled in programs in the Medical Physics & Applied Radiation Sciences and Engineering Physics departments each year have the opportunity to conduct their own neutron irradiations using the pneumatic sample transfer system, create their own radioactive standards for gamma counting experiments, meaure the spatial distributions of neutrons in and around the reactor core, and even stand by the poolside as the reactor is started up by the Reactor Operations. McMaster is the only university in Canada at which undergraduate students have the exciting and invaluable opportunity to gain hand-on experience with a medium flux nucler reactor as a part of their educational experience.
