Iodine-125

McMaster Nuclear Reactor is one of the world’s leading suppliers of Iodine-125, with fully qualified stock solutions prepared and dispensed on a weekly basis. This radioisotope is manufactured by neutron irradiation of high purity xenon-124 gas to generate xenon-125; following decay under anhydrous conditions, the daughter radioisotope iodine-125 is dissolved in high purity dilute sodium hydroxide solution, qualified, and dispensed as per customer specifications.

Other Radioisotopes

MNR maintains a small research and development group that focuses on the production of high specific activity radioisotopes with applications in physical and medical sciences. Of particular interest at the moment are the radiotherapy isotopes I-131, Lu-177 and Re-186. Quality Assurance

All radioisotope stock solutions are analyzed in-house by quality assurance technicians prior to shipment. Criteria that are evaluated include:

  • Radionuclidic purity (gamma spectroscopy)
  • Radiochemical purity (radio-TLC or radio-HPLC)
  • Specific activity (NAA, HPLC)
